Whey protein ranking — honest review
I’ve tried a lot of wheys. Here’s the actual ranking — no brand deals, no fluff.
What I compared
Taste, mixability, protein per gram of powder, and price per kg. Nothing else.
I’m not going to rank on amino acid profiles or ingredient lists — most of these are marketing noise for someone buying a basic whey protein. The practical criteria are: does it taste good, does it mix without clumps, and is the protein-to-price ratio honest?
I tested each one with water (not milk — water is the real test of mixability and taste). Chocolate and vanilla variants where available.
The ranking
1. Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard (Chocolate) — benchmark. Mixes perfectly, tastes like proper chocolate, no artificial aftertaste. Expensive but justified. Available globally.
2. MyProtein Impact Whey (Chocolate Brownie) — close second on taste. Wait for a sale — they discount heavily (sometimes 40–50% off). At sale price, best value in the top tier.
3. MuscleTech Nitrotech — overhyped. Marketing-heavy. The creatine and BCAAs added are in amounts too small to matter. Overpriced for what it is.
5. Generic/store brands — skip. Protein spiking is a real problem with unverified brands. Test reports show many with inflated protein claims.
Best budget pick
MyProtein Impact Whey on sale — the discount events are frequent and deep. Subscribe to their emails and buy in bulk when they run a promotion. Best protein-to-price ratio when bought on sale.
Best taste pick
ON Gold Standard Chocolate — it’s the standard for a reason. If you hate protein shakes and struggle to get through them, this is the one that actually tastes like something.
What I use now
I use MyProtein Impact Whey when I can catch a sale, and ON Gold Standard as my backup. I buy from Amazon or the brand’s official site. Avoid random resellers for whey — contamination and fakes are a real problem.
The takeaway
ON Gold Standard is the safe choice. MyProtein on sale is the best value. Skip anything without a verifiable third-party test certificate.
